28 February is Rare Disease Day
Today marks Rare Disease Day 2023, the official international awareness-raising campaign for rare diseases which takes place on the last day of February every year. The main objective of the campaign is to raise awareness amongst the general public and decision-makers about rare diseases and their impact on patients’ lives. Globally, over 300 million people live with a rare disease. In Europe, there are more than 6,000 distinct rare diseases affecting up to 36 million people. Around 80% of rare diseases are of genetic origin and, of those, 70% already start in childhood.
